在延安时期新华社工作的英国专家。早年毕业于牛津大学。1937年来华，在燕京大学任教。1940年曾短期担任英国驻华大使馆新闻参赞。1941年12月太平洋战争爆发后由北平通过重重封锁线进入晋察冀抗日根据地，在那里工作两年多。1944年抵达延安，被朱德总司令聘请为第十八集团军总司令部无线电通讯顾问。不久，参与筹建新华社对外英文广播的工作并正式留在新华社，担任英文改稿工作。1945年11月离开延安回国.
