造山带的前沿科学问题之一是如何实现其向陆内的大规模水平生长。在造山过程中,前陆褶皱-逆冲带会以前展式、后展式或者混合式等形式扩展,形成包含双重逆冲构造和逆冲叠瓦扇等典型构造样式在内的薄皮或厚皮逆冲推覆构造。前陆盆地也会逐渐卷入变形,并发生向稳定克拉通方向的迁移。前陆褶皱-逆冲带的扩展配合前陆盆地的迁移,这样的前陆系统活动形成了造山带大规模的水平生长。
