航空发动机应用于高空,飞行跨度较大,温度剧烈变化,温差在少十度甚至到上百度。与此同时,大气环境产生剧烈变化,增加了对发动机冷却系统的要求。与地面环境相比,万米以上高空的散热条件恶劣。空气密度随海拔的递减又对活塞发动机提出了增压要求,从而给热管理系统引进了增压中冷这一新的热源,进而增加了冷却系统的负荷。这些因素制约着航空活塞发动机性能的提升和轻量化的发展,成为了困扰航空活塞发动机技术突破的瓶颈之一。
